Marrying Trace McConnell was the dumbest thing she’d ever done. Sleep had eluded her completely last night. Lying in bed next to Mei Lin and the baby, she’d contemplated the ramifications of her decision and come to the conclusion that she was an idiot.

The sounds of Bobcat’s snores and someone, probably Trace, pacing the floor provided background noise for her rampaging thoughts. Not exactly how she’d imagined spending a wedding night. Not that she’d imagined those sorts of things, since she’d never intended to marry.

Breakfast was a hurried affair at which she decided to ignore her new husband. Which wasn’t as hard as she feared, because he wasn’t in the cabin.

“The men went to get the horses from the livery.” Mei Lin set a steaming cup of coffee on the table in front of Lily. “They will be back soon.”

Trace stalked into the cabin and grabbed his saddlebags from the chair by the door. “Can you ride?”

She jumped when she realized Trace had actually deigned to speak to her. “Of course I can.” Well, she supposed she could. How hard could it be? And if she even whispered that she hadn’t been on a horse since a single pony ride as a child, Trace would have her handcuffed and on the Money Creek stage before she could say “sweet potato pie.”

“Hurry up. Daylight’s wasting.” Trace headed out the door, his rifle resting on the saddlebags slung over his shoulder.

And good morning to you, too. Lily set her coffee cup on the table and stood. “Mei Lin, thank you for your hospitality.”

Mei Lin looked up from spooning oatmeal into the baby’s mouth and smiled. “It has been my pleasure, and you are welcome here anytime.” She handed the little girl a crust of toast to gnaw on in her basket and wiped her hands on her apron before coming around the table to hug Lily. “Things will work out fine for you. We will be praying you find your niece safe and well. Trust God, Lily. He is in control, no matter how things appear right now. And trust Trace. God brought him as a blessing into your life just when you needed him. Just like God brought Hart into my life.”

Lily nodded, though she had to admit that at the moment Trace seemed more of a trial than a blessing.

Three horses stood saddled and waiting in front of the cabin. Lily paused in the doorway to inhale the misty morning air, cool enough to remind her that fall was fast approaching. The reason for this journey, always in the back of her mind, stampeded to the forefront. Was Rose warm enough? Did she have anything to eat? Had she already been sold to someone somewhere? Fear crawled up Lily’s throat and lodged there.

“And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee, for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.”

The promise rose unbidden. And the truth of the verse hummed in her mind. God was faithful. He hadn’t forsaken her, no matter how often life’s blows came at her.
