Marrying Trace McConnell was the dumbest thing sheâd ever done. Sleep had eluded her completely last night. Lying in bed next to Mei Lin and the baby, sheâd contemplated the ramifications of her decision and come to the conclusion that she was an idiot.
The sounds of Bobcatâs snores and someone, probably Trace, pacing the floor provided background noise for her rampaging thoughts. Not exactly how sheâd imagined spending a wedding night. Not that sheâd imagined those sorts of things, since sheâd never intended to marry.
Breakfast was a hurried affair at which she decided to ignore her new husband. Which wasnât as hard as she feared, because he wasnât in the cabin.
âThe men went to get the horses from the livery.â Mei Lin set a steaming cup of coffee on the table in front of Lily. âThey will be back soon.â
Trace stalked into the cabin and grabbed his saddlebags from the chair by the door. âCan you ride?â
She jumped when she realized Trace had actually deigned to speak to her. âOf course I can.â Well, she supposed she could. How hard could it be? And if she even whispered that she hadnât been on a horse since a single pony ride as a child, Trace would have her handcuffed and on the Money Creek stage before she could say âsweet potato pie.â
âHurry up. Daylightâs wasting.â Trace headed out the door, his rifle resting on the saddlebags slung over his shoulder.
And good morning to you, too. Lily set her coffee cup on the table and stood. âMei Lin, thank you for your hospitality.â
Mei Lin looked up from spooning oatmeal into the babyâs mouth and smiled. âIt has been my pleasure, and you are welcome here anytime.â She handed the little girl a crust of toast to gnaw on in her basket and wiped her hands on her apron before coming around the table to hug Lily. âThings will work out fine for you. We will be praying you find your niece safe and well. Trust God, Lily. He is in control, no matter how things appear right now. And trust Trace. God brought him as a blessing into your life just when you needed him. Just like God brought Hart into my life.â
Lily nodded, though she had to admit that at the moment Trace seemed more of a trial than a blessing.
Three horses stood saddled and waiting in front of the cabin. Lily paused in the doorway to inhale the misty morning air, cool enough to remind her that fall was fast approaching. The reason for this journey, always in the back of her mind, stampeded to the forefront. Was Rose warm enough? Did she have anything to eat? Had she already been sold to someone somewhere? Fear crawled up Lilyâs throat and lodged there.
âAnd they that know thy name will put their trust in thee, for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.â
The promise rose unbidden. And the truth of the verse hummed in her mind. God was faithful. He hadnât forsaken her, no matter how often lifeâs blows came at her.
